This municipality would not last long, though, and stopped operating after running into financial difficulties. Almost 30 years later, in 1887 the City of South Saint Paul was formed, taking up the area that is currently both West and South Saint. Paul.

Two years later there was a dispute within the city of South Saint Paul regarding representation, which lead to the split that resulted in the formation of West Saint Paul where it currently stands. West Saint Paul is now a prosperous suburb of the Twin Cities with a population of just under 20,000.
